(NOTE: Timestamps are for video version only.)

In this episode we are discussing Chapter 3 of Emotionally Healthy Discipleship by Peter Scazzero.

Pg 37 — Too many followers of Jesus are chronically overextended and doing more for Jesus than their inner life with him can sustain. (1:40)

Pg 41 — A person who practices being before doing operates from a place of emotional and spiritual fullness, deeply aware of themselves, others, and God. As a result, their being with God is sufficient to sustain their doing for God….They receive from God more than they do for him. (9:20)

Pg 45 — Summary of the “be before you do” approach: 1) You cannot give what you do not possess. 2) What you do is important, but who you are is even more important. 3) The state you are in is the state you give to others. (15:50)

Mary and Martha — Luke 10:38-42 (26:55)

How to be before you do: (28:40)

  • Pg 50 — We must flee from a life of overcommitment and hurry in order to learn how to be before you do.
  • Pg 53 — Know what’s motivating you.
  • Why am I always in a hurry?
  • Why am I so impatient?
  • What is that anxiety all about?
  • Why am I so angry, and why did I get so defensive when ____ happened?
  • Why do I avoid conflicts?

Pg 55 — Integrate silence and listening into your prayer life.

Pg 57 — Morning devotions are great, but not enough.

Final Thought (39:24)

Pg 57 — You’re too focused on being a human doing instead of a human being when…

  • You can’t shake the pressure of feeling you have too much to do and too little time.
  • You ignore what your body is telling you about stress and anxiety.
  • You’re concerned with what others think of you.
  • You’re often fearful about the future.
  • You’re always in a rush.
  • You’re defensive and easily offended.
  • You’re preoccupied and distracted.
  • You fire off quick opinions and judgements.
  • You feel unenthusiastic about or threatened by the success of others.
  • You spend more time talking than listening.

Pg 45 — Do I really want people to imitate the way I am living? In what areas of my life am I speaking of things I am not living?
