Discussion on the book Because He Loves Me by Elyse M. Fitzpatrick
This is more of a statement of encouragement for me than a question. On page 120 Fitzpatrick lists four motives to strive against sin to do good works in the grace HE SUPPLIES through the gospel even though we will never be successful. (8:10))
pg 84, paragraph 2: Interesting though that “Rather than relegating eternal life to a future day.....his life is yours.” (13:40)
In Chapter 7 she talks about how a seed must be planted within us (pg. 112) to grow in sanctification and that it’s impossible to obey his commands without that (Pg. 116). Is it possible to not respond to this call, and therefore not grow in sanctification when it’s coming from the Lord in such a way? How can I pray for my growth in sanctification or the growth of others? (20:20)
What is the difference between punishment and redemptive discipline? (from pg 92, #3) (28:10)
Where was Jesus/Jesus’s Spirit during the three days he was in the tomb? Was he with the father? Was he still suffering for our sakes or was God’s wrath already complete at that point? (30:35)
This comes out of Chapter 11 and Gospel Centered Relationships. On page 178 Fitzpatrick states “This idolatry of privacy and individualism is one of the greatest detriments to sanctification in the church today.” In that chapter she explains a model for vulnerability in the church and in relationships among believers. She gives some practical tips about how we can live this out, but I’d love to hear more discussion about how we can foster these types of relationships within our life groups or relationships with other believers we know? How can we at Gateway encourage a safe place for people to open up more and be real. (31:20)
