On Sunday, December 15, we bet you noticed something a little bit different during our Sunday morning services at both campuses: our youth were serving in all of our hospitality roles! Over the past month, we have been working through a Sunday night teaching series with our students examining the “why” behind what we do as Christians from gathering weekly, worshipping, praying, and serving. As a lead-up to our youth serve Sunday, our Hospitality Director, Kristi St Amour, taught on why we are called to serve as members of the body of Christ.
We love our students at Gateway Church, and our number one priority for us as we disciple them is not to make sure they have fun in Kidway and Youth Life Groups, but to help them develop a lifelong relationship and commitment to Jesus and his Church. There are a whole host of ways we pursue our goal of making disciples who make disciples such as Bible teaching, small group word-based application, and helping students build relationships with the entire church body. While all of these things are crucial as we disciple the next generation, studies have consistently shown that young people who serve alongside adults as they are growing up in the church are significantly more likely to stay connected to a local church as they enter adulthood. To encourage this, we are always trying to find ways to get our young people in the church to serve side by side with their parents, Life Group leaders, or other adults. The youth Serve Sunday was a wonderful way to help encourage more of our students to get involved and bless our church family with their smiling faces and time given! Several of our students even commented afterward that they wanted to get more involved and serve regularly in the areas they were assigned that morning!
We hope it was a blessing for you to see our students serve in so many obvious ways. If you are the parent of a student who hasn’t found a place to serve yet, please let us know so we can help you get them connected to an area they would be perfect for!
