What would you ask God for if you knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that He is all-powerful and that His love for you is amazing?
John Newton, writer of “Amazing Grace” answers the questions in one of his other hymns,
“Thou art coming to a King
Large petitions with thee bring
For His grace and power are such
None can ever ask too much.”
A big God can answer the biggest and boldest prayers, even beyond our expectations. And He wants His people to know that no one can ever ask too much. Many passages of Scripture encourage praying large petitions.
James 16-18 (ESV)
…The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 17 Elijah was a man
with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three
years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven
gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.
Matthew 7:7-8 (ESV)
7 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to
you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
Ephesians 3:20-21 (ESV)
20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think,
according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ
Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen
Romans 8:32 (ESV)
32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
1 Chronicles 4:9-10 (ESV)
9 Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez,
saying, “Because I bore him in pain.” [a] 10 Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, “Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm [b] so that it might not bring me pain!” And God granted what he asked.
So – if your view of God is the Bible picture of an all-powerful and loving King, then pray big and bold, believing that God will be glorified in His answer and that His answer will be more abundant than we ask or think.
