Why Life Groups?

Acts 2:41-42 states

“So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. 42 They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”

Can you imagine the excitement of the disciples seeing all of those people being saved? But I’m sure it was followed by, “Oh boy, now what do we do?” All of a sudden you have gone from a group of a hundred and twenty or so to 3000. Add a little gospel. and boom, you have large group of people with no place to put them. They did meet in the large temple court regularly, but the one element that sustained the first church was their constant gathering together in their homes. So, they went from a crowd to the core of the movement we now call Christianity. The first structure for believers to meet wasn’t built until 230 AD. This building was only made up of two rooms. One was for teaching and worship and the other was for baptism. The church is not a building. It is those who come together to fulfill the mission of the Gospel.

This biblical example is one of the reasons we promote and encourage everyone, including our children, to be a part of a life group. It is impossible for a large congregation like ours to connect to each other without being intentional. If all you do is show up on Sunday for worship and don’t get plugged in, you will get lost in the crowd and never feel connected to the body.
