It is important in these times to understand there are many frustrations with not being able to meet face to face but let us embrace this moment and thank God that we can still meet virtually. Here are a few tips and tricks I have picked up as I have studied and led virtual meetings.
Prepare and Plan - Make sure that you send your group an invite and any material that you are going to talk about in advance. If you are going to discuss a video, make sure everyone has ample time to watch it beforehand. It is also recommended that you send scriptures and the questions you plan to ask so everyone has them during your gathering. I have found success in sending everything via text on the morning of the day we are going to meet.
Test your Tech - Try to make sure everything is working a few minutes before your group is to start. Check your volume, camera, and background. The truth is that problems will come up. So to limit frustration for yourself and others, make sure you are ready to go (many suggest fifteen minutes before your scheduled time). This gives you breathing room if you encounter a problem. The two issues most people face are that they can’t see anyone or hear the people on the other end. Always unmute your mic, turn up the volume, turn your camera on, and place it at eye level. When talking, look into the camera, not at the screen. Make sure you are in a well-lit room so people can see your beautiful face. Finally, check your background. Remove anything from view that might distract your group members.
Connect and Have Fun - Take time to talk and see how everyone is doing. You may need to lead the group through this by calling on each member individually. Some people may be afraid to talk over each other, so don’t be afraid to call on people. This also works well during your formal group time as well. Have fun and remember everyone is in the same situation you are. Involve the kids and pets in the beginning if you want. If they interrupt during group, that is ok as well. Try to treat this time as your regular group time. Turn off your notifications and don’t multi-task. Pay attention as if everyone is sitting in your living room. But most importantly, take the time to make sure your group members are doing ok. If they need care in any way, please let your coach know. We want to help.
