Let’s Stop Asking High School Graduates Where They Are Going to College Article

Emily Peters, North Main Kidway Director & Assistant Youth Director

In elementary school, we encourage children to dream about what they want to be when they grow up. From veterinarians to firefighters and everything in between, kids are thinking early about future careers. As adults, we listen to these dreams while using the filter that they may change their mind in 10 years and that’s okay.

As students move beyond elementary school, the conversations that center around what they want to be when they grow up become a lot more real. They are closer to becoming a grown up and being out in the real world. This can be both exciting and terrifying. Students can often struggle with comparison in this season as they see their friends committing to big universities with big job dreams… especially if this is not their plan.

Read more in this week’s resource about how to engage students as they talk about future plans regardless of where their path may lead.
